Entry from: Agra, India Entry Title: “Taj Mahal” Entry: “A chilly dawn start saw us strolling through the Babur Gardens towards the Tah Mahal with our guide Sharma, passing monkeys, street dogs and joggers. There was already a queue, one side for women and the other for guys and a strict security system prevailed. Like Fatehpur Sikri and the Red Fort, the Taj is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and India ain’t taking any chances with its most precious icon. As we waited, disappointed crowd members were being turfed out for carrying video equipment, food and even newspapers. A gaggle of tiny, bird-like women in colourful saris chatted excitedly, pushing and poking me as if it would get them in faster. It didn’t. I got chatting to Elizabeth from the US. After finishing a PhD in International Development, she was off to work on a project developing Gujarat’s slums. Felt slightly envious of her worthy career choices. But then… I got to work on music mags and interview Nirvana in my day – would I have given that up? No way. Built by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz (who died in childbirth after delivering her 14th), it took 20000 workers 22 years to build this sublime marble mausoleum. Sadly the Shah didn’t have too long to enjoy it and was imprisoned by his son for being too extravagant with …

Entry from: Agra, India Entry Title: “Delhi to Agra” Entry: “7-12: I went back to Jama Masjid and it was well worth the double effort. I wouldn’t consider it to be the most beautiful mosque I’ve seen but it certainly is the largest. Apparently it can hold 25000 people. It has a huge courtyard with a “pool” in the middle where people can wash up. I then went to Connaught Place which has a round park in the middle surrounded by a roundabout (one can definitely see the British influence with the roundabouts, driving on the opposite side of the street, and the metro signs are almost identical to the London underground signs) and streets stemming out from the park with high end shopping and restaurants. You can find a Levi’s store, a Nike store, McDonalds, KFC, etc. I found a cheap Indian restaurant and started talking with this guy. He was born in India, raised in Seattle, educated in London, and now hopes to open hotels in India. We sat in the park for awhile and met later on for drinks at his friend’s club. He’s leaving for Kashmir Tuesday for a couple weeks and I may change my plans a bit to meet him up there for some hiking in the Himilayas. 7-13: Today I went to Lodi Garden, a large, beautiful park very well landscaped to relax, read and take a nice pleasant stroll. 7-14: Today I left for Agra …

A lot depends on how it is inlaid. If the top is an inlaid design of all marble, use a stone cleaner like the new 409, TileLab or Countertop Magic stonecleaner. If the marble is inlaid into wood, the job becomes a little more difficult because you cannot use the marble cleaner on wood without damage and you cannot use the wood cleaner on marble without damage to the finish. You literally have to clean each inlaid piece of marble individually by applying the cleaner to a soft rag and cleaning that piece of marble by carefullly tracing it. Then using another rag, use the wood cleaner/polish to clean in between the pieces of marble.

You can find wooden handcrafted furniture in the trade fairs like the one organized at Pragati Maidan in Delhi or Surajkund Mela in Haryana. However, this year there is no crafts fair left to be organized. However, a shopping festival cum crafts fair is to be organized in Gurgaon on the lines of surajkund crafts fair during the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) to be held in Delhi. A pre-shopping festival would also be organized in February 2010 in Gurgaon itself in order to assess the arrangements needed for this October trade event. You can try and find good furniture there.
If talking about the regions where wood furniture and other handicrafts are made, you can refer to the write up about their Manufacturing Regions at http://www.wooden-handicrafts.com/manufacturing-regions.html
