Question by I gotz that wicked clown love: Can you put tile on ontop of a table?
you know those tables with a slate or marble top? well i love those but cant find any i can afford, so i was thinking of making my own. is it possible to put like vinyl or laminate, or even ceramic or porcelain tiles on a table top? how would i go about making it look right?

the laminate would be the easiest and cheapest, what is your table top now, the tile would require cutting and nibbling with a lot of waste , and perhaps reinforcing, to make it sturdy enough, and possibly renting tools as well to cut the tile.
You would also have to put a layer of wire down for the tile mud to grab onto, since most tables are sealed surfaces
laminate 1 day project, Cost the laminate , proper glue, a file (to trim the edges)
tile would be a few days Cost the tile , bag of tile set, bag of grout, tools to cut and nibble

I found some beautiful tiles and I want to put them on a table top. Where can I find a table that is made for tile inlay on top? I want a wood table. I haven’t really been able to find anything in the unfinished furniture websites. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong ones. Any websites?

craigslist freecycle or even thrift stores that way you can do whatever you want and not out too much money

Question by Ferosia: How to remove tile inlay from coffee table?
I just bought this coffee table that has 4 -12″x12″ tiles inlayed into the top. It is a really out dated tile that I would love to replace with a more up to date style. How can I safely remove the tile without damaging the wood around it?

Break the tiles with a hammer. Start at the center and make a spot where you can get under the edges of the tiles. Use a chisel or wide screw driver to pry up the old tiles. They’re probably just glued down in a few spots and will come up easily.

That’s a great idea, and should look really nice. I might almost recommend going just glass OR tile, because the combination will be very heavy. Do you have a dremmel? That’s going to make shaping the tiles much easier. As for the table itself, a large wire spool makes a great sitting table (about 2 feet high, and 3 feet diameter. Look up “Rigging” in your local phone book and ask if they have any empty spools. Usually they just get thrown away. Have fun!

Question by Irony Of Poe: How do I make a tile inlay in a wood tabletop without damaging the wood around it?
I am making two end tables. For the top, I want to have a wood border with tile on the inside. How do I apply the grout between the tile and the wood without ruining the wood? Will finishing the wood first protect it from the grout? Won’t the wet grout damage the wood, even if it is only on there for a little bit?
Also, the base of the top was going to be plywood. Is there a better substitute to put the tile on other than plywood?

Build your exterior frame and put a piece of plywood under it at the proper depth so the tile will be even with the surface. Sand finish and seal all of the wood surfaces. You don’t want any moisture being absorbed by the wood. Now lay and grout your tile. Try not to scratch the wood surface. Apply another coat of finish to the wood after everything else is finished…Best of luck.
